Margaret Taylor
Margaret Taylor, first lady to President Zachary Taylor,
military leader, and 12th President of the United States. As the wife
of a military leader, Margaret was happy to support her husband in his career,
even uprooting her family many times to accompany him from one post to another.
Unfortunately, when he left the military and ventured into politics, she wasn’t
too happy to support him, but she did. As first lady, she didn’t like being a hostess
at events at the White House, so she delegated that duty to her oldest daughter
Betty when her husband was elected President. Margaret preferred to mingle with
a small group of close friends where she could talk about politics freely
without being judged on her opinions.
Although Margaret didn’t attend any of the social functions
when her husband was inaugurated, she did attend the swearing-in but
then retired to her rooms in the White House. She was classified as a simpleton
who lacked the social graces to appear at such events. Unfortunately, as First
Lady, she didn’t accomplish much due to President Taylor’s demise 16 months
after becoming President due to gastroenteritis issues. She left Washington and
moved in with her children for the remaining years of her life in utter seclusion
from the public. Wo years after President
Taylor’s death she died at her daughter Betty’s home in Pascagoula,
Mississippi. She is buried with her husband at the family grounds in Louisville,
Kentucky.
Margaret Taylor was the only First Lady to have lived on the
American Frontier, residing in various military camps and barracks alongside Zachary
Taylor during his military career.
