Oliver Wolcott, Was Governor, Founding Father, and Veteran
of the American Revolutionary War. Wolcott was born in Connecticut on November
20, 1726, which is why he is being highlighted on this day. His birthday is days
away. Wolcott was one of the strongest supporters of Independence. His stand
against England and King George was simply put, “we will not give up our rights
and privileges.” In 1776 he stated: “Our differences with Great Britain has
become very great. What matters will issue in, I cannot say, but perhaps in a
total disseverance from Great Britain.” He was both a military leader during
the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War under General
George Washington, and a member of the Continental Congress. He didn’t sign the Declaration of Independence
at first, but later signed on to it and was also a signer of the Articles of Confederation
as a representative of Connecticut. He was a brave man willing to sacrifice everything
in order to safeguard the new Country in which the Continental Congress was
creating and sever all ties to England and King George once and for all. He
left a legacy worthy of admiring. He is buried in Litchfield, Connecticut where
he died in 1797.
