Old Bethpage Village Restoration – New York 11-4
Another historical location from my childhood that gave me
my appreciation for what is known as the care and breeding of crops and
animals. Old Bethpage Village is saving grace of Long Island’s history of just
that, growing of crops and raising of animals that once fed the farmers and
neighbors across the Island. The powers that be in Nassau County decided in the
1950s to preserve 209 acres in Old Bethpage, New York in the hopes of
preserving the architectural and rural history of the 18th and 19th
century way of life on the Island. In 1963 they began breaking ground to
preserve the area as a little village wherein they would showcase how to do
basket weaving, carpentry, blacksmithing, broom making, cooking the old way,
canning, preserving, spinning, knitting, and haberdashery work of making
clothes and finishing hats. The farming area depicts life on a farm during the
19th and 19th century too where they raise cows, sheep,
goats, turkeys, chickens, picks, ducks and geese. This is not a petting zoo, do
don’t expect to physically interact with the animals, they aren’t trained for
that kind of living. The farming aspect is an awesome way to learn how to grow
all sorts of crops. The crops are also
sold every harvest season at the local market on the property. You can also buy
anything made at the village in the gift shop too. It’s a great place to visit
and bring the kids so they can learn as I did as a child to appreciate the hard
work those who live on a farm endure each day. You’ll also appreciate what it
took to cook, preserve and create what you ate, used and produced on the farm
during the 18th and 19th century. I am thankful for those
who took the time to create the Old Bethpage Village and preserve it for future generations to learn from
the experience.
